Margaux? St. Émilion? Pomerol? Grave? With slides from our recent trip as a backdrop, John will share his practical knowledge of how to buy good Bordeaux wines on a budget, with a tasting of three reds and a white. Then we will have an informal supper where we will pair those wines with small-plate tastings of the cuisine of southwestern France (lamb in bordelaise sauce? mussels? roasted vegetables? cheeses? pastries?) We will discuss food preferences with our guests ahead of time, and there will be a handout with information including decanting, the point system, storage, mail order purchase, and experiences with local Columbus wine stores. 8 0 .0003E7 30 10/27/19 4:00 PM Y N N

Join in the fun at Alum Creek. Wine, cheese, veggies, dips (in the lake of course) and beer just might be hidden on board. Often a reluctant crew member is forced into the water by a couple beers, and has the renewed courage to get a lesson or outperform the captain on his slalom ski. A saucer, kneeboard, and maybe even a tube are typically ready for frivolity. Background music by Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell. Satire from the Capitol Steps should have some Trump trashing by summer. Leave Paul's at 10am, at the South East boat ramp at 11:30, off water at 5pm. The Bees Knees!
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Have a fun and BEEautiful time learning about cuckoos, tigers, fuzzy bellied, metallic greens, and more! These are just a few of the fascinating 500+ NATIVE bees in Ohio! Most of our native bees are solitary and live in the ground or in tiny cavities and are 90 percent more effective pollinators than our non-native honeybees.

In this presentation, you will learn how to identify our native bees as many are very tiny and extremely fast moving, or can be confused with wasps or flies, and find out how we can easily attract and support them in our gardens. We will cover:

- Why native bees are important
- How to identify a bee vs other insects, flies, and wasps
- Differences between social bees and solitary bees
- Discover which ones are the ground nesting and cavity nesting bees
- Four things we can do to support and attract them to our gardens.

We can head out to the Sunny Glen Garden to see what pollinators are around or you can check out our garden photos.

A Night at the Opera: Gounod's "Romeo et Juliet"
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
"Romeo et Juliet" was first performed in 1867 to critical acclaim despite problems with the lead tenor. Reviews for the London performance mention "very pretty duets," "a sparkling waltz air," "tragic genius" equally mixed with "the highest capacity for comedy." Since it was not videotaped, come to Bertina's to see a more modern version on film with the same beautiful music and passion.

Beverages and hors d'oeuvres, delicious of course, to accompany. Kleenex for the death scenes free as well.

In "Wise and Otherwise" the object is to correctly identify a proverb or to make up a substitute that appears to be genuine. In "Codenames," the object is to prevent political intrigue and disaster by trying to think like your partner. Have fun celebrating tradition while saving the world!

A variety of suitable snacks and drinks will be served to fortify the players. Conveniently located at Kittie and Steve's in exotic Clintonville.

Guided Twilight Swamp Hike in the Mating Season for Fireflies and Chorus Frogs
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
It's Big Sexy Time in the swamp for Lightning Bugs and Gray Tree Frogs. You see a few fireflies here and there on any summer night but the vast majority of firefly flashes are concentrated for about a week's time in early to mid-June. It's firefly mating season and there is an EXPLOSION of firefly light. The musical accompaniment is provided hundreds of male Gray Tree Frogs on the make. The firefly show starts at around 9:30 and peaks between 10 and 10:30. We will meet in the parking lot at the Wilma Schiermeier, Olentangy River Wetland Research Park, 352 W. Dodridge Street, Columbus, OH and walk the less than a one-mile loop with some longer options. There are thousands of starlings roosting nearby and it is not uncommon to see raccoons, bats, and sometimes owls. Flashlights are discouraged but red lights are fine. We can provide red lights for about 10 people and bug spray. 50 27 .00015E7 15 6/14/19 9:30 PM N N N

Join me as I lead a tour sampling the renowned Contemporary Art collection of Ron and Ann Pizzuti whose gallery is now part of the Columbus Museum of Art. There are several exhibits that I will show you: WHEN ATTITUDES BECOME CHAIRS - showcases chairs that will amaze you! Once a fairly restrictive field in which form tended to follow function, it is today one of the most dynamic of all creative disciplines. PAIR II - highlights two artists who use everyday objects and materials which undergo beautiful and unexpected transformations. LIGHT - The works in this exhibition use light to consider space, to illuminate ideas, and to question perception. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes after which you may explore on your own. Please let me know if you are a member of the CMA. 8 -4 .00015E7 15 3/30/19 1:00 PM N N N

Orienteering!

Invalid Image Link
This sport is like a road rally in the forest. You are given a detailed topographic map (and maybe a compass) with several control points indicated. You follow the map, reaching all the control points, in order, going as fast or as slow as you like.

I have experience teaching Orienteering from my Boy Scout days. Our local O-club presents several O-meets a year, giving elementary instruction beforehand. I would like to take you to one where we will have some instruction before we hit the trails. After the O-meet we'll find a place to eat and compare notes. I will cover any entrance fees and the lunch afterward.

There are many O-meets on the schedule but I'm thinking of the one at the Park of Roses, Clintonville, OH.

See you on the trail.

Join Fujio Hayashi for sake tasting. Fujio is no expert, but he will introduce you to a variety of sakes. We will taste at least six different sakes, including Junmai, Honjozo, Ginjo, Nama-zake, and Nigori. We will serve some of them both heated and chilled to compare the taste under two conditions, both of which are used with some sakes. Junmai is a pure rice sake. Honjozo contains a small amount of distilled brewers alcohol. Ginjo is a premium sake that uses special yeast and fermentation techniques and results in more complex flavor. Nigori is a cloudy white sake coarsely filtered with very small bits of rice floating around in it. We will also taste Nama-zake, which is a sake equivalent of a draft beer. Light appetizers and a Japanese influenced dessert are included in this tasting.

Please be prepared to walk two flights of stairs as Fujio lives on a third floor apartment with only stairs.
