Franklin County Landfill Tour (was 7/9)
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
With environmental consciousness driving us, and SWACO’s goal of 75% diversion of waste, how about taking a look at the huge local dump? Join us for a 90-minute "tour" which will include a classroom presentation in SWACO’s Resource Center and a bus tour inside the operations of the landfill. SWACO (4239 London Groveport Rd., Grove City 43123) is a public agency focused on promoting awareness about the importance of waste reduction, recycling and safe disposal at the landfill. After a talk on recycling right and landfill engineering, we’ll get a close-up view from a school bus ride around the dump. No weather or safety concerns as we will stay on the bus. Carpool from the church at 9 am. Snacks will be provided after the tour at nearby Fryer Park (3899 Orders Rd., Grove City 43123) which has a historic village on the grounds. 30 17 .00015E7 15 12/3/22 10:00 AM N N N Y

Decorative Coal Bucket
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Decorative coal bucket, believed to be antique. Perfect for storing coal to put in your children's or grandchildren's Christmas stockings if they are naughty. We had no need to read parenting books. We simply threatened our kids with coal in their stockings and watched them go from delinquents to honor students! (Well, maybe not but you get the idea.) Will deliver to church or nearby. It has the motto of the British Order of the Garter on it. For context please see https://www.royal.uk/order-garter and https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/12/why-coal-symbolizes-naughtiness/578857/. 1 1 .0003E7 30 N N N N

Guided Firefly Hike
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
You see a few fireflies here and there on any summer night but the vast majority of firefly flashes are concentrated for about a week's time in mid-June. It's firefly mating season and there is an EXPLOSION of firefly light. The musical accompaniment is provided by hundreds of male Gray Tree Frogs on the make. The firefly talk starts at around 9:30 pm and we walk between 10 and 10:30 pm.

Location: TO BE DETERMINED (depending on conditions). Last year we walked in the Tallgrass Prairie at Whetstone Park of Roses but traditionally, we meet in the parking lot at the Wilma Schiermeier, Olentangy River Wetland Research Park.

It is not uncommon to see raccoons, bats, and sometimes owls. Flashlights are discouraged but red lights are fine.

This spirit being is a watercolor by Ruth Shaffer, a former member who died years ago. She told me the design came from a Christmas card created by Jackie Kennedy. Ruth gave it to me for Christmas. An Enlightening Day on Lake Erie
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Join us as we spend the day exploring some of the lighthouses on Lake Erie. We will leave the church around 9 am and carpool to the lake. We will enjoy visiting and learning about some of the lighthouses that helped make traversing the lake safe for sailors. We will provide a picnic lunch. We might also have some time to do a little beach combing, and to provide an eco justice aspect, help clean up some of the beaches we visit. This will be an active trip with stair climbing. We will meet at the church at 9 am and carpool from there. We will return home by 6 pm, unless people want to stay later, but dinner will be on your own. 10 10 .00025E7 25 8/13/22 9:00 AM Y N N Y

Life is a Beach! Enjoy It
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Join us for a fun filled day searching for "treasures" on the shores of Lake Erie. You may find beautiful rocks or beach glass, intriguing pieces of driftwood, or interesting bits of urbanite. What is urbanite you ask? Join us and find out. We will provide the tools and knowledge you need to locate these treasures. We will also provide a picnic lunch. As an Eco Justice component, we will also provide trash bags to help clean up any beaches we visit. This will be a full day, carpooling from the church at 9 am and returning by 6 pm. (If people want to stay longer we will be glad to, but dinner will be on your own.) 10 8 .00025E7 25 5/14/22 9:00 AM Y N N Y

Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
You are invited to an outdoor gathering with a multimedia twist! Please join us for a pizza/wing/game night in our backyard.Gather responsibly with friends outdoors, make your own pizzas in the pizza oven, enjoy chicken wings smoked on the grill, and sides and drinks will be provided!

We’ll have outdoor games at the ready and as nightfall approaches we’ll set up a campfire and the outdoor screen for some friendly, yet competitive, video party gaming for ALL ages and comfort levels (Jackbox, Just Dance, or even Mario Kart/Smash Bros!). Kids are welcome (we have a play set and trampoline to keep them amused). A liking for dogs is appreciated. We will check with our guests prior to make sure we are able to accommodate dietary restrictions, and if the weather is inclement we will work with our guests to find an alternate date.

We'll keep it green with compostable or washable plates and cutlery and ethically and responsibly sourced ingredients as much as we are able!

Visit to Rumpke Recycling Plant in Columbus

Tour includes a short auditorium presentation by Rumpke Education Specialist, a short walk to the facility, and a complete tour of the operation. (Not wheelchair accessible). Goggles, safety vest, and ear plugs provided. Car pool from First UU or meet in facility parking lot.

Home Solar System Purchase - Home Owner Experience Based Presentation for Buyers
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Thinking of installing a solar panel system at your home? Or just curious about these systems? If so, you won't want to miss this Zoom presentation by the First UU EcoJustice group (no vendors present). A 45-minute presentation followed by a 45-minute Q&A session will be hosted by First UU homeowners who have solar panel systems installed at their homes. Topics will include (1) the process from engaging a vendor through switching on the system, (2) what equipment is installed, (3) approximate cost and financing options (often surprisingly low cost), (4) viability for homes without a South-facing roof (good news!), (5) monitoring and maintenance, (6) what happens if you need a new roof or move, and (7) the federal tax credit. Note that "off-grid" systems and backup batteries will not be covered.

Note that the pricing is per household. This presentation also offered on 3/6/2022.

Portrait of BLM Icon Breonna Taylor
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Breonna is an icon in the Black Lives Matter movement. She was a medical emergency technician, who was shot to death late one night in a botched investigation of drug dealers. The police forced entry into the apartment. Her boyfriend, thinking they were intruders, shot at them. They returned fire and killed Breonna. This should be a familiar story to anyone working for racial justice. I think there has still not been a proper investigation.
Portrait is 11.5 x 14.5 framed, done in watercolor by myself.
I can deliver to buyer if local.
