Bike Ride and Caprese Dinner
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Join Amanda, Jim, and River for an early evening ride on the beautiful, shady Alum Creek Trail, followed by one of our favorite early autumn vegetarian dinners!

We will meet at our house and bike to the trail, half a mile’s ride mostly in bike lanes. You can also drive and park by the trail if you feel more comfortable. We will bike north on the trail through forests, fields, and over unique bridges that cross the creek, for a comfortable one-hour out and back ride of up to 12 miles.

Then we will retire to our back yard to enjoy each other’s company as the day cools and the sun sets. We will enjoy locally grown tomatoes and basil, fresh mozzarella, corn on the cob, and wine or juice. Vegan options available on request.

Guided Firefly Hike
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
You see a few fireflies here and there on any summer night but the vast majority of firefly flashes are concentrated for about a week's time in mid-June. It's firefly mating season and there is an EXPLOSION of firefly light. The musical accompaniment is provided by hundreds of male Gray Tree Frogs on the make. The firefly talk starts at around 9:30 pm and we walk between 10 and 10:30 pm.

Location: TO BE DETERMINED (depending on conditions). Last year we walked in the Tallgrass Prairie at Whetstone Park of Roses but traditionally, we meet in the parking lot at the Wilma Schiermeier, Olentangy River Wetland Research Park.

It is not uncommon to see raccoons, bats, and sometimes owls. Flashlights are discouraged but red lights are fine.

The Salamanders' BIG Night
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
On the first warm rainy night in the spring, hundreds of salamanders leave the woods and crawl to the nearest vernal pool for the BIG NIGHT. It's the only time of the year when they mate. And you/we want to be there! We can do that by watching the weather. The weather needs to be at least in the mid-40s with overnight rain showers. When this happens, I will call everyone and we will meet at Spruce Run Nature Center (https://goo.gl/maps/QEXgRXXrN69Ty4P96) for the party! Bring your rain gear and perhaps, a lawn chair. Approximate event "schedule;" 10pm to 1am (weather depending). Snacks provided (likely, the crunchy-salty food group). Bring your favorite cold-wet weather beverage. 8 15 4 .00015E7 15 N N N N

Lake House Retreat for UU Women Who Like to Think, Talk, Hang Out, Chill
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Come deepen your connection with other UU women at my cozy lake house in Chippewa Lake, Ohio. This is a THREE DAY WEEKEND during which we collectively talk, relax, walk, play cards, color mandalas, visit an antique store, a second-hand shop, or the lovely gardens of the community. Plan a book discussion or yoga time, cycle for the ambitious! Or a camp fire! Or swim a little. With a longer period of time, we might get to the famous Cleveland Art Museum or an other day excursion.

Lots of good food, wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages will be inevitable. This year, however, I ask you to bring a little dessert, favorite snack, or beverage to share. I (Nancy) will provide the rest of the food, and we will probably have one meal out in a nice place nearby. Towels and sheets provided, just bring a change of clothes and a toothbrush! And a light jacket. Cottage is comfortable and has all basic amenities.

Previous years’ experiences have made it clear that it will not be hard for us to find lots of meaningful connections. How often do we really get to talk?

Nancy will be ready for you at 12:00 PM Thursday, September 14. Stay until Sunday September 17 until 2, or when the troupe of fairy god cleaners arrives.

There is no internet service, but cell phone reception is decent, and Nancy has a hot spot.

Food needs and preferences all accommodated with notice. Healthy food is the plan, with some fun stuff thrown in!

Address is 41 Shadywood Drive, Chippewa Lake, Ohio. Chippewa Lake is Ohio’s largest glacial lake, an old and quiet, pretty community about 90 minutes from Columbus, almost a straight shot up 71N toward Cleveland, 20 miles due W of Akron. Carpool if you can, but there will be enough parking space regardless.

The assumption is that full vaccination status for Covid-19 is a given. Only vaccinated people can be accommodated. We will follow CDC directives current for the time, adapt plans as needed. Plenty of out door space, separate sleeping areas for all.

Voucher for At Home Pet Euthanasia
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
This voucher is good for one Pet Euthanasia Appointment or Quality of Life Consultation by Tranquility Vets. The only thing NOT included in this voucher is cremation, which is around $200 depending on pet size. The voucher is transferable, so you can give it to a friend or neighbor in need of our services, and it never expires!

Home Euthanasia is such a different experience then saying goodbye in the vet clinic and can even be a healing experience. We have more time to talk, process, and grieve. The pet does not have to get in the carrier or car. And the family doesn't have to travel home from the clinic empty handed. Caring is our calling and we would be honored to help a First UU family or friend have the best possible end of life experience when their pet's time comes.

Tranquility Vets is a mobile At Home Pet Euthanasia Veterinary Practice founded by Dr. Clare Rathjens to help pets pass in their sleep, in the comfort of their own home surrounded by loved ones. Dr. Clare is an SYC and ROCS parent and lives in Clintonville.

Use of the voucher is subject to Dr. availability, but every effort will be made to accommodate the request when the time comes. We know this is usually a last minute decision and we will go above and beyond our usual scheduling protocols for the holder of this voucher. The winner of this voucher will receive instructions for booking an appointment via phone or online, as well as direct contact information for Dr. Clare.

Voucher value: $450

Local Artist Discussion: Sid Chafetz
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Visit Art House Retreat in Clintonville for a discussion of late OSU Professor emeritus Sid Chafetz's art. Several pieces from a private collection will be showcased as we explore how his social commentary is still relevant in today's political climate and how art and nature can help each of us make sense of society and the community we want to foster. Event is planned for 90 minutes (10am - 11:30). Light refreshments will be offered.

Please note the home is not fully accessible and requires the use of steps into the house.
